TESTICULAR ULTRASOUND

The two testicles are the primary male reproductive organs. They produce sperm and the male sex hormone testosterone. Scrotum is the sac which hangs below the penis and contains the two testicles. Male partner in the marriage is sometimes advised to undergo ultrasound of the scrotum to identify the cause of male infertility. If there is any kind of swelling or pain in the testicles then also ultrasound is advised. Some patients have undescended testicles in which one or even both the testicles are not in the scrotum. In such cases also ultrasound of the scrotum helps. If there is any kind of lump in the scrotum which can be felt during clinical examination then ultrasound is done to identify the shape, size and echotecture of the lump to classify it as a benign or malignant tumour and carry out further investigations like MRI.

WHEN IT IS DONE

Scrotum Ultrasound is done to verify whether a lump in your scrotum or testicles is a solid mass indicating tumour. If the lump in the scrotum is filled with fluid, it indicates a cyst. Scrotum ultrasound also helps in evaluating the extent of any kind of injury during a trauma to the testicles. It could be testicular torsion which is twisted testicles. Each testicle connects to the rest of the body by a spermatic cord. This tube contains an artery and a vein. The tube also includes the vas deferens, which carries sperm from the testicles to the urethra. In Scrotum Ultrasound the radiologist can study blood flow in the testicles to find narrowing or blockages interfering with the flow of semen and hindering fertility.
