NCCT of the abdomen is done to detect any stone or traumatic injury to the abdomen. Apart from these problems, non contrast CT scan of the abdomen has not much utility. CECT of the abdomen gives very useful information about any kind of tumour in the organs like Gall Bladder, Liver, Pancreas, Stomach, Urinary Bladder, Kidneys or Intestines. However the Liver Tumours are best visualized on Triple Phase Liver CT Scan. This is a special application and is not available on all CT Scans. All our centres are equipped to do Triple Phase Liver CT scan. In this study there are 3 phases of contrast - hepatic arterial phase, portal venous phase and the washout phase. The contrast enhancement in different phases would indicate different things for the radiologist and would help in differentiating between the different types of liver lesions. Both Alcoholic Liver Disease and Non alcoholic liver disease are on the rise and in such patients triple phase liver ct scan gives valuable information about the liver disease.

How Triple Phase Liver CT is done

For Triple Phase Liver CT Scan, the patient has to report at our centre on empty stomach with overnight fasting. Normally the appointment is given for 9 am. On arrival of the patient at the centre, we would first do a blood test to see the kidney functioning. If the kidney function test is normal then contrast can be given to the patient. For patients with abnormal kidney function, MRI Abdomen would be a better testing modality. Do not wear any jewellery when you come for the testing. You would be given a hospital gown to wear before the test. The patient has to lie down on the CT Table and the technician would place a canula on the arm or back of the hand. During the examination, contrast is injected through a pressure injector which is connected to the canula. The patient can go home within minutes of the completion of the test. Radiologists would need 6-8 hours for studying the images procured during the test to prepare the report. The films or the CD can be taken immediately after the test while the report is emailed to you within 24 hours.

Cost of the Test

Triple Phase Liver CT Scan requires very fast CT Scan machine. A minimum of 16 Slice CT Scanner with sub second rotation is ideal for this test. All our centres have 16 Slice or higher CT Scanners on which Triple Phase Liver CT Scan would be done in around 15 minutes. The cost of Triple Phase Liver CT Scan is in the range of Rs. 9,500 - 11,000 while the cost of CECT Abdomen is Rs. 7,500 - 9,000. The cost of kidney function test is in the range of Rs. 500 - 750 which is needed before contrast can be given to the patient. A good CT Scan machine of 50 slices would cost in the range of Rs. 1.5 - 2.0 Crores. Another high cost is the cost of tube which ranges between Rs. 35- 50 lacs and lasts for 3-4 years. The contrast given during the exam is also a very costly consumable. In Triple Phase Liver CT the cost of the contrast administered is in the range of Rs. 3000 - 4000.
